What does virtual instance mean?

I have seen the term virtual instance but don’t know what it means. Can someone explain it? Does it mean SQL Server instance created in Virtual Server? Thanks.
I don’t think it is anything to do with sql server intance…
I believe it is related to windows virtual server…or os related… Just google "what is virtual instance" you may get some info…
