How to save a DTS package to Meta Data Services

This is what BOL says about this: To save a DTS package to Meta Data Services
1. In Data Transformation Services (DTS) Designer, on the Package menu, click Save.
2. In the Location list, click Meta Data Services.
3. Complete the rest of the required fields. The problem is that I cannot choose Meta Data Services in the Location list.
I can see SQL Server, Structured Storage File, Visual Basic File, but no Meta Data Services. Is this option avaiable only in some SQL Server’s editions?
Does it depend on options that I’ve chosen during setup?
What is the edition of SQL server you’re using?
IS this an upgraded SQL server from ver.7? Satya SKJ

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 – 8.00.760 Personal Edition

No, it is not an upgraded SQL Server.
Refer tohttp://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dtssql/dts_metadata_3ui4.asp for information on upgrading DTS information Model. I can’t reproduce the issue at my end as I don’t have Personal Edition to install, whereas in Standard & Enterprise editions its available. May try on the machine with SE. Satya SKJ

Strange. I’ve just checked this in SE and EE. It is available in the former, but not in the latter.
It looks like this is limited by Edition release.
But I can see this in SQL Enterprise Edition. Satya SKJ

Yes, but in my case it is Enterprise Edition doesn’t have the option that allows to save a DTS package in Meta Data Services. I guess I will have to dig into setup options.
I tried this, I can’t see this option on any of my servers, regardless of version. I’ve never really seen the point of Meta Data Services though, why do you want to use it? Tom Pullen

There are 2 reasons:
1. Honestly, I can see no reason to use Meta Data Services right now, too. However, there is such option in SQL Server, so I want to know how it works. Maybe a day will come, when I need it.
2. I am preparing to 70-228 exam, so I should know it. And that brings me to my next point.
I believe this option of Meta Data services is relying on the process of SQL setup, as I don’t have any issues at my end on SE or EE to save the dts packages.

I’ve re-installed SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition on one of my machines. I’ve chosen to install all available options. But I cannot save DTS packages to Meta Data Services. At least I know that it has nothing to do with installation options.
I don;t think its available with Personal edition. Satya SKJ

Long time ago, but I can’t see what was the solution and I have the same problem Choppen had. Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition SP4 I’m working in server and I can’t save DTS in SQL Server Meta Data Services because option is off. Others options are on. Luis Martin

I haven’t solved this problem so far, Luis. I’ll post it to microsoft.private.directaccess.sqlserver and we’ll see what they tell.
I’ve got an answer from microsoft.private.directaccess.sqlserver – by default, SP3 and later disables the option to store DTS packages in Meta Data Services. More information can be found herehttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/servicepacks/SQL/2000/SP3ReadMe.asp paragraph 5.7.4 http://tinyurl.com/75fyc). Can someone check this and post the results here?
(I’ve got no SQL Server without SP3a. And no virtual machine, too.)
Chopeen, Thanks, I was shooting in the dark. The link results is: Sorry, web not available, bla, bla. Luis Martin

The links are fine now – I corrected them.

OK, I was tired yesterday. I’ve just re-read the article I mentioned. After enabling the option ‘Enable Save to Meta Data Services’, I can save my packages to Meta Data Services.
Ï’m sorry, I suppose you already know it. My fault.
