N+1 cluster?

We’re getting ready to put in some new production SQL clusters, and the network group is pushing hard for an N+1 cluster (as opposed to several active/passive ones) because it will save money. Is anyone out there doing N+1 clustering for a 24×7 SQL environment?
We do have one service with this kind of setup, but rarely get issues such as slow performance and recently after configuring proper AWE settings no further issues. The requirements for CPU and RAM will vary depending on what role the server plays role in the cluster. Satya SKJ
