Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to use a data type that is unknown to the system.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Error of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. Data types must be know to SQL Server before they can be used.

USE tempdb;
GO
DECLARE @t VAR

Remarks:
In the above example we try to declare a variable of the type VAR. Because this type is unknown to SQL Server, the error is raised.
