Foreign key references to temporary tables are not supported. Foreign key ‘%.*ls’.

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to create a foreign key constraint referencing a temporary table.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity Level 15 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. You cannot create a foreign key constraint referencing a temporary table.

Versions:
All versions of SQL Server.

Example(s):
IF OBJECT_ID (‘#T2′) IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE #T2;
GO

IF OBJECT_ID (‘dbo.T1′) IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE dbo.T1;
GO

CREATE TABLE #T2 (c1 varchar(20) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY);
CREATE TABLE dbo.T1 (c1 varchar(20) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY
    CONSTRAINT FK_T2_T1 FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES #t (c1));

Remarks:
In the abve example we try to create a foreign key constraint referencing the temporary table #t. This raises the error.
