Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Find out more about this book,
or purchase it, from Amazon.com

As I stated in my review of the previous edition of this book, Inside SQL Server 7.0, and I want to say it again, this book is a "must-have" for all DBAs, beginner and experienced alike. Even if you have the previous edition of this book, if you manage SQL Server 2000, you will also want to pick up a copy of this new edition.

In many ways, this book provides the same type of reference material that was in the previous book, which in itself makes it the best reference available on how SQL Server works internally. As you might expect, the book covers the new features of SQL Server 2000, but what you might not expect is the additional level of detail offered in the book that was not covered in the previous edition. If you are one of those people who needs to know about virtually every facet of SQL Server, then you will revel in this book's depth.

As I have stated in many different places throughout this website, if you want to master SQL Server performance tuning and optimization, then you need to learn how SQL Server works under the covers. While there are many books available on how to administrator SQL Server, this is the only book I have found that documents how SQL Server works internally. This book provides you with the in-depth information you need to become a master at SQL Server performance tuning.

Some of the topics in this book of special interest include:

  • Architectural overview, including many details of how SQL Server works internally

  • Planning for and deploying SQL Server

  • Using Query Analyzer and Profiler to optimize performance

  • An in-depth look at indexing and how indexes are used for performance tuning

  • Optimizing query performance

  • Transact-SQL programming, includes many performance tips

Although I highly recommend this book, it is not for the brand new DBA. If you are new to SQL Server, you will want to read a beginning book first. But once you have mastered the fundamentals, then you are ready for this "must-have" book.
