Behold, not automatically! I'm afraid, I don't know the interna of the nomination and awarding process.

But I know, for example, that Rob Volk and Nigel Rivett almost exclusively post on SQL Team.com and not in the newsgroups and have been awarded MVP. However, I also think, that posting to the newsgroup is the fastest way to make MS aware of you.

    Thanks Madhivanan.

A good resource of information from Frank about MVP and yes it is not awarded on the number of posts in newsgroups, in fact MS will have a barometer about that individual contribution to SQL Server community. I'm sure this is how Frank has got MVP status.

Hey, I was awarded because of my contributions to the German community (both newsgroup and my site), although I was pretty active on SQL Server Central.com, which was also noticed by MS. <br /><br />But there are many *very* knowledgeable people out there who are not MVP's. Actually among my five favorites (whose postings I enjoy and appreciate) 3 are not MVP's. Don't ask, I won't give names. Becoming a SQL Server MVP is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Traditionally, posting in public forums has been the main route to becoming an MVP. Currently, if you run a website, write books, or are a public speaker, you can also become an MVP without being a forum poster. In the past, as an MVP, our MVP lead has asked other MVPs for nominations for new MVPs, but this has not happened in a long time. Also, each country or regional groups of countries has its own MVP lead. For example, the MVP SQL Server lead in the United States mostly manages MVPs from the United States, although there are some exceptions from some older MVPs in other countries who speak English. But to be honest, I don't know how the actual decision process works of who is nominated and selected. When I was selected, it came as a complete surprise.

If I have understood this correctly from my MVP lead, I was on both consideration lists (US and Germany), and because I am from Germany she took me under her wings. Yes, it's quite common to get a question what one thinks about some other poster in the newsgroups. In addition to that, MS supporters who monitor the newsgroups make referrals. There used to be a webform where you can suggest someone for possible MVP consideration, but I've lost the link. And I was never really sure, that it actually did work. Anyway, basically MVP is a "Thank you for past contributions to the community". Like Brad said, these contributions can be made in many different ways, but I think helping others online in the fastest way. but definitely one doesn't have to be MVP to be knowledgeable. Satya is probably one of the best examples for this.<br /><br />...and who knows what there is to come.
