I have a couple the questions to ask about sql server 2005 versus sql server 2008 since I am new to sql server. (My small company will be using sql sever 2008 within the next month or two:
    1. Can I use the SSIS manager 2005 on the sql server 2008 database?
    2. Can I use the SSIS manager 2008 on a sql server 2005 database?
    3. I have heard about a CTE being a new feature in sql server 2005. Can you point me to a URL where a CTE can be used with alot of joins?
    4. What are the other new sql features in sql server 2005 and links as references for these new features?
    5. What are the other new sql features in sql server 2008 and links as references for these new features?
    6. Between sql server 2005 and sql server 2008, are there sql statements that are deprecated (Not valid any more)? If so what are the deprecated features?

    Hi Jassie,
I am not sure what you refer as SSIS Manager. Are you referring SSMS?
In SSMS, you have an issue as SSMS 2005 will not connect to SQL 2008 database. (But it is possible for SSMS 2008 to connect to SQL 2005 database)
There are a couple of limitations on CTE. First of all many say (and I have experienced) It is much slower than loop. Books oline gives some help on CTE. This article below talks about the performance of CTE http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/T-SQL/2926/. I see another post (Is it you come as JasmineGirl in SQLTeam.com?) asking for the same question and answer is given,
On What is new, are you searching for any specific features. If not the following links will help to get an overview. (There are nothing other than google search. Hope you will try this first for your next question)
    SQL Server 2005? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337468(SQL.90).aspx
    SQL Server 2008? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb500435.aspx
Deprecated features: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143729.aspx (Available in SQL 2008, but marked for removal)
    Discontinued features: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144262.aspx (Removed already)
If you need specific features, please make the questions specific.
