Unpredictable performance of FullText-Index search

We have a table with around 8311707 records. One of the columns is OriginalString varchar(500). We need to execute a partion match on this column with following condition -

    contains(originalString, '' formsof (inflectional, '+@ThisTerm+') '' )

Other details about the catalog are as follows -
    1. Item Cound - 8311708
    2. Catalog Size - 235 MB
    3. Unique key count - 474064

We are observing a strange behavior while search. For some words which are very common, above search takes from 1.5 - 2 minutes. But for uncommon words it is completed within couple of seconds.

Because of this problem, the system behavior is not predictable and users are not happy with it.

Has anybody observed the similar behavior earlier? What could be the reason for this inconsistent behavior. Are there any configuration setting, which could improve the performance?

    Thanks and Regards,
