Hi there We are taking the backup of a database on on server and then move that backup file to other server. Its about 6 Gb and takes about 15 min to tranfer. I am thinking of zipping the file which will make it to 1 gb and then transfer it. Will zipping cause any harm to the backup file. Thanks Danny
The zipping itself should not in and of itself have any negative impact on the backup. There are third-party backup tools, which even include such a compression feature. It might make sense for you to check out the tools section here. Zipping should not cuase any problem but if you use third party your backup and restore time also fater than native along with smaller file size.... I use LiteSpeed to backup VLDB databases.... MohammedU. Moderator SQL-Server-Performance.com
