When you click on a specific table (see the top window in the above screen) the bottom window shows the specific columns in the table. You may notice that each column has a check by it. By default, all columns in a table are scripted. But if you like, you can choose to only script those columns that you want to script, not all of the columns.
When you are ready to select data to script, you can select as few or as many tables from a database to script. In addition, you can select as few or as many columns in each table to script. The allows you great flexibility when deciding what data you want to script.
Before you begin scripting data from tables or views in a database, you may want to set one or more scripting options, as seen below.
As you can see, the Options screen has many tabs, each with a wide variety of options to help you customize how Apex SQL Script works for you. There are too many to describe in this short article, but I wanted you to be aware of the flexibility of this program.
Once you have selected the tables and columns you want to script, along with the appropriate options, the next step is to create the insert script. In my case, I will create an insert script .
The above screen shows how a default (no special options have been selected) insert script looks like. Also note, that before the script runs, all constraints are disabled, and once the script runs, they are re-enabled on the database’s tables. This is an option you can to choose to turn off if you like.
Once the script has been created, you can choose to edit it if you want, and you can run it from Query Analyzer at anytime in order to insert records as needed. Or, if you prefer, you can choose to run the script from the window above. It is a full-fledged IDE that you use to edit the script, save it, check syntax, and run it against SQL Server.
And that’s it. That’s how Apex SQL Script works. As you can see, it is a very simple tool to use.
