Column '%.*ls' on table '%.*ls' is not of type XML, which is required to create an XML index on it.

Error Message:
Msg 6330, Level 16, State 201, Line 1
Column ‘%.*ls’ on table ‘%.*ls’ is not of type XML, which is required to create an XML index on it.

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to create a XML index on a column that is not of the XML data type.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. XML indices can only be created on columns of the XML data type.

Versions:
This error message was introduced with SQL Server 2005.

Example(s):
USE tempdb;
GO
IF OBJECT_ID(‘tempdb..#t’) > 0
 DROP TABLE #t
GO
CREATE TABLE #t
(
 id INT PRIMARY KEY,
 c1 VARCHAR(MAX)
)
GO
CREATE PRIMARY XML INDEX IX_XML_t_c1
    ON #t(c1);

Remarks:
In the above example we try to create a XML index on the column c1 of the table #t. Because this column is not if the XML data type, the error is raised.
