The primary xml index '%.*ls' does not exist on table '%.*ls' column '%.*ls'.

Error Message:
Msg 6344, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary xml index ‘%.*ls’ does not exist on table ‘%.*ls’ column ‘%.*ls’.

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to create a secondary XML index on a column for which no primary XML index exists.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. In order to create a secondary XML index a primary XML index must exists.

Versions:
This error message was introduced with SQL Server 2005.

Example(s):
USE tempdb;
GO
IF OBJECT_ID(‘tempdb..#t’) > 0
 DROP TABLE #t
GO
CREATE TABLE #t
(
 id INT PRIMARY KEY,
 c1 XML,
 c2 AS id * 4
)
GO
CREATE PRIMARY XML INDEX IX_XML_t_c1
    ON #t(c1);
GO
CREATE XML INDEX IX_sXML_t_c1
    ON #t(c2)
 USING XML INDEX IX_XML_t_c1 FOR PATH

Remarks:
In the above example we try to create a secondary XML index on the column c1. Because there is no primary XML index for that column, the error is raised.
