UNION ALL view '%.*ls' is not updatable because column '%.*ls' of base table '%.*ls' is used multiple times.

Error Message:
Msg 4443, Level 16, State 8, Line 1
UNION ALL view ‘%.*ls’ is not updatable because column ‘%.*ls’ of base table ‘%.*ls’ is used multiple times.

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to update a UNION ALL view but at least one column of an underlying base table is referenced more than once.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. Each column of each underlying base table can be referenced once.

Versions:
All versions of SQL Server.

Example(s):
IF OBJECT_ID (‘dbo.T’) IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE dbo.T;
GO
IF OBJECT_ID (‘dbo.T1’) IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE dbo.T1;
GO
IF OBJECT_ID (‘dbo.V’) IS NOT NULL
    DROP VIEW dbo.V;
GO

CREATE TABLE dbo.T
(
    c1 int PRIMARY KEY,
    c2 int
)
GO

CREATE TABLE dbo.T1
(
    c1 int PRIMARY KEY
)
GO

CREATE VIEW dbo.V
AS
SELECT
    c1,
    c1 as X
FROM
    dbo.T
UNION ALL
SELECT
    c1,
    c1
FROM
    dbo.T1;
GO
UPDATE dbo.V
    SET
    c1 = 1;

Remarks:
In the above example we try to update the view dbo.V. Because the column c1 of the underlying base tables dbo.T is referenced twice, the error is raised.
